Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Dan Bruton, M.Eng., P.Eng. is a senior geotechnical engineer with over 24 years of consulting experience delivering complex infrastructure projects with a focus on energy, transportation, municipal and marine terminals. Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Dan has worked extensively throughout Western Canada and internationally, bringing a strong understanding of both design and construction developed through experience with consulting firms and contractors. His broad geotechnical expertise includes geotechnical site investigation and characterization, shallow and deep foundation design, pile and drilled shaft design, seismic and liquefaction analyses, slope stability assessments, and ground improvement solutions. Dan regularly serves as Geotechnical Engineer of Record and provides practical, construction-focused recommendations informed by extensive experience supporting projects through construction. Dan is an experienced project manager and has successfully led multidisciplinary teams through planning, investigation, design, and construction for municipal, transportation, energy, municipal and port authority clients. He is particularly recognized for his ability to integrate geotechnical, structural, and environmental considerations to deliver robust and constructible solutions for complex infrastructure projects. His experience is outlined below:

Marine & Coastal Infrastructure

  • Geotechnical site investigations from land and marine platforms (barge-based drilling, CPTs, sonic drilling)
  • Foundation design for marine structures, including driven piles, drilled shafts, monopiles, and specialty piles
  • Lateral and axial pile analysis for wharves, jetties, trestles, dolphins, and mooring structures
  • Settlement analysis and ground improvement design
  • Seismic, liquefaction, and lateral spreading assessments for waterfront facilities
  • Slope stability and reclamation fill design for shoreline and port developments
  • Construction support, pile load testing (PDA), and Engineer of Record services

Energy & Utilities Infrastructure

  • Geotechnical investigation and characterization for pump stations, sewer interceptors, and utility corridors.
  • Shoring, excavation support, and dewatering design for deep excavations
  • Foundation design for energy and utility facilities in soft and variable ground conditions
  • Seismic hazard, site response, and liquefaction assessments
  • Trenchless installation support, including pipe jacking and microtunneling assessments
  • Settlement and movement assessments for buried infrastructure
  • Construction-phase geotechnical support and risk mitigation

Transportation Infrastructure

  • Geotechnical investigation and foundation design for bridges, culverts, and elevated guideway structures
  • Pile, drilled shaft, and shallow foundation design for bridge abutments and piers
  • Embankment stability, settlement analysis, and ground improvement design
  • Seismic and liquefaction analyses for transportation corridors and structures
  • Temporary works design, including detours, temporary abutments, and excavation support
  • Assessment of construction impacts to adjacent infrastructure
  • Geotechnical construction review and Engineer of Record services
